Overview

The Ghorepani Poonhill trek is one of the most sought-after and family-friendly treks in Nepal. This is a relatively easier trek for beginners since the maximum altitude is 3210m, and the whole trek is of short duration. Nonetheless, this trip is filled with adventure, excitement, and experiences that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

 

As soon as you arrive in Kathmandu, our staff will be there to receive you personally and take you to the hotel. Once you get refreshed, you will be taken to various cultural sites in Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and anywhere that you request. Kathmandu is the hub of Nepal, where you can find a mix of culture and traditions. The next morning, you will leave for Pokhara and reach by late afternoon. Here, you can spend your evening exploring the beautiful Lakeside. You will take a drive to Nayapul and make your first trek to Banthanti. The next day, you start your trek to Ghorepani. The trail may be a bit steep as you pass through forests of oaks and rhododendrons. At Ghorepani, you can enjoy the views of the Annapurna I (8091m) and Annapurna South (7219m). You will hike to Poon hill early in the morning to view the sunrise over mountains in the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range. While returning to Pokhara, you can enjoy the natural hot springs available in Tatopani. The best time for this trek would be from March to May and September to November as the temperature is mild, and there are very fewer chances of unpredictable weather.

As soon as you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, our staff will be there to receive you and drop you to your hotel. After getting refreshed in your hotel, our guides will take you to visit some of the famous heritage sites of Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. If you wish to visit any other places, you can inform us, and we will take you there.

After an early breakfast, you will travel to Pokhara. On the way, you can enjoy the views of Trishuli River, Manakamana, Malekhu, and Mugling Bazaar along the way. You will reach Pokhara in the late afternoon. You can spend the evening strolling along the Lakeside. Moreover, you can also take a boat ride on Phewa Lake and enjoy the surreal view.

We will leave for Nayapul early in the morning. It will take approximately 2 hours to reach there. We can have breakfast and get refreshed there before we begin our first trek to Banthanti. On your way to Banthanti, you will come across thick forests of rhododendrons and oaks. There is a steep uphill climb before you reach the village of Banthanti.

After breakfast, you will make your way to Ghorepani. You will again pass through forests of rhododendrons and enjoy the view of Hiunchuli (6441m) along the way. We will stop on the way to Nangethanti for lunch. We make our way to Ghorepani for an overnight stay there, where you can learn about the culture and tradition of the Gurung people living there.

You will take a hike to Poon Hill early in the morning to view the sunrise as this is the main attraction. You do not need to carry your rucksack since we will be returning the same way. From Poon Hill, you get a magnificent view of Mt. Annapurna (8091m) and Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m) along with many other mountains in the Lamjung and Gangapurna ranges. Then, you descend back to Ghorepani. After breakfast, you make your way to Tadapani. As you make the descent, you will come across a fantastic view of the rural hillsides. You can stop in a village called Deurali, and you reach Tadapani in the late afternoon.

After breakfast, we make our way to Jhinu Danda. The trail to Jhinu descends alongside the Modi River as you trek to Jhinu. This is a mostly downhill trek where you come across forests of rhododendrons, oaks, and bamboos. You can take a relaxing bath in the hot spring and relieve the strain from days of trekking.

After breakfast, you will begin the trek to Pothana. Pothana is a small village that is usually the hub for other treks also such as Annapurna Base Camp trek, Gurung Heritage trek, etc. You are almost at the end of the trek so, and this will be your last chance to take in the beautiful view. Pothana is a small village of dominantly Gurung and Magar people, and you can try the local cuisine in the evening. Overnight stay in Pothana.

You are now on your way to Phedi. While on this trek, you will also come across a village called Dhampus. It is a hub for trekkers going to Annapurna Base Camp. You can see beautiful forages of rhododendrons on the way. When you reach Phedi, a jeep will take you to Pokhara. You will reach Pokhara during the late afternoon.

You will leave Pokhara in the morning and begin to drive east. We will stop for lunch in Malekhu, which is famous for fish delicacies from the Trishuli River. You will reach Kathmandu in the late afternoon. You can stroll around the streets of Thamel in the evening and buy some souvenirs as a memento.

01: How hard is Ghorepani & Poon Hill trekking?

One of the shortest and most moderate treks around the Nepal Himalayas and southern Annapurna Himalaya range.
The walk leads with a gradual rise in altitude each day reaching the height of 3,210 m / at Poon Hill. On each day trek leads get you acclimatized by spending overnights at certain heights on route Ghorepani village. The tough part of the trek is climbing uphill with a long downhill.

02: How are the foods on trekking?

All meals are served with care and hygiene in every lodge on route trekking, where our guides all make sure that the meal is all right for you, meals are served as per the menu provided by the lodge.
Main meals Nepali Dal / Bhat (boiled rice-mild vegetable curry with Dal and pickles of your choice) vegetable serves depends upon the season, meals include fried/boiled noodles with eggs/veg or plain of your choices. Continental dishes are also available in most of the lodges on treks.

03: Are there any health care or hospital on route trekking?

The only hospital is in Pokhara (the start and end point of the trek) rest of the bigger villages and towns have small health posts. But it lacks experienced doctors or medical staff. On the trek, the Brown Bear Trail guide will carry a comprehensive medical box with medications for general illness and wounds only.

04: How about safe drinking water?

At every lodge that you stay overnights, our guide and lodge owner will refill your water bottles with hot boiled (or cooled) water, which is safe for drinking purposes, in some areas of Annapurna areas. There are few safe drinking water stations provided by ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project).
Which is much cheaper than in lodge restaurants. Buying bottled water can be quite expensive in mountain areas it will be a hazard to waste empty water bottles. As Brown Bear Trails are committed to Eco and Responsible Tourism, our guide will discourage buying plastic water bottles, only in emergency situations.
Purifying tablets work only 30-40 % in Himalayan waters (due to heavy minerals contained like magnesium-iron and bi-carbonates), the only safe is way boiled cooled water.

05: Does all cell / mobile phones works on trekking?

Depending upon the area if you are in a deep gorge or valley chances of communication on cell / mobile phone is less, but in high ridge and hills, most of the mobile do receive signals.
In most local areas where cell-phone works mostly in towns and villages, most lodge and shops/stores on trekking have STD / ISTD phones which can cost much higher due to their remoteness. But in deep gorges and hidden valleys, the net is disturbing sometimes.

06: What do I expect on this treks?

Ghorepani & Poon Hill is one of the most impressive and short trekking in the whole Himalayan area. Where trekkers can experience varied climate-vegetation-landscapes to local culture in each village. From low paddy fields to cooler hills walking amidst rhododendron and pine forest. Enjoying stunning sunrise views over the panorama of Himalayan peaks from Dhaulagiri, Annapurna to Manaslu with majestic Machhapuchare Himal the Fish Tail peak.

07: How much money to carry on the treks?

Depending upon your choices of extra expenses on refreshments drinks/snacks on routes as well as buying local souvenirs, hard drinks and beers can be expensive in higher altitude villages than in lower areas, (try to avoid hard drinks and beer on routes higher altitude for safe trekking it can cause de-hydrations and make problem with altitude sickness.
On the way back downhill one can enjoy drinking at the end of the treks, an average of NRS 300-400 per day (just in case you need to spend for your own personal use), otherwise all meals and accommodation will be included in the package.
Tipping and gratitude after the treks at your own will (however a long history and traditions in trekking/climbing or in tours where staff-guides-porters will expect tipping from the services provided).

08: What happens if someone gets sick on treks?

For minor sickness stay for a few days at the same lodges, accompanied by friends or our trekking staff. Continue to walk to the end at Pokhara, for serious illness has to be brought down to safe areas or reach Pokhara for medical help.
In critical cases, using the service of a Helicopter for the safest rescue to bring the patient to Pokhara or Kathmandu for medical treatment. Where one can claim through your medical Insurance back home.
