Best seasons for Tsum Valley Trek:

The best time for this beautiful trek around remote areas of Tsum Valley is in the spring and autumn seasons, spring from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are short with sun-light hours temperatures can drop to freezing temperatures, around the higher region, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Religion and Culture:

North of Gorkha district around Tsum Valley populated by Tibetan origin people known as Tsumbas the tribes of Tsum around remote Mid-West Nepal Himalaya. The native around high Tsum Valley follows strong Buddhism religion of age-old culture similar to their predecessors Tibetan, on this trek, you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments.

On this trek above Jagat village, coming across rows of prayer walls, spinning and wheeled prayer with Buddhist stupas, where walking clockwise will be the right way to respect the local culture as well visit of monasteries.

Overview

Tsum Valley Trekking, an adventure around remote pockets of Nepal North Mid-West. Once a forbidden country closed for outside visitors and remains as restricted area, due to its remote, inaccessibility location. The Tsum villagers avoided outside modern impacts and change for centuries, opened its doors for travelers from the year 2008. Since then trekkers and adventurers began to enter this hidden country obtaining special entry permits for Tsum Valley trekking.

Tsum area known as the valley of happiness translated from the ancient Tibetan language ‘Beyul Kyimolung’. The country still retains its beautiful pristine wilderness, age-old unique culture, and heritage as it were past centuries.

An exciting area, a Shangri-La remains undisturbed by the main flow of visitors, where only a few groups of trekkers seldom venture. Where Old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal to Tibet with caravan train of mules and yaks. Laden with goods passed through Tsum Valley, trade still exists but in smaller number than in early days. Since Tibet became part of mainland China in the late 1950s, the vast wilderness of Tsum is an extension of the Tibet plateau.

Tsum Valley Trekking involves drive both ways from Kathmandu to reach the starting point of the trek at Maccha-Khola farm village. Where walk follows Budi-Gandaki River upstream past rural farm villages around low sub-tropical areas to reach cooler alpine hills. The adventure continues from one village to another with a dramatic change of landscapes, vegetation, and climate as the walk enters the high country.

From the village of Jagat onward entering the restricted areas of Tsum Valley, as the climb continues walking into a forest path. Where walk leads into villages of strong Tibetan influence with similar culture and heritage of farm life.

The adventure leads to lovely villages of Lokpa, Chumling, Chokan Paro then at the Nile the last large settlement around Tsum. From Nile village short day hike to Mu Gompa our main highlight of the adventure. As walk heads east where tree lines fade for short bushes around arid, dry terrain to Mu Gompa.

At Mu-Gompa the highest spot of the trek, enjoy the rest of the day’s visit to Nuns monastery called Dhephyudoma, perched on the lap of the Himalayas.

The area is also a residence of the snow leopard and often prowls around hunting for easy prey like young yak calf. Around the monastery facing grand views of Ganesh Himal with surrounding close peaks of high Tsum valley.

After an enjoyable and exciting experience at Mu Gompa, return journey on an alternative trail via Burgi village and Lungdang Gompa. An opportunity to explore remote scenic areas of Tsum, adventure slowly heads towards a low warm farm area at Maccha-Khola. Next, early morning taking an interesting long drive back to Kathmandu, where our fabulous adventure Tsum Valley trekking concludes.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, received by our guides and staff for short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of
Manaslu & Tsum Valley Hidden Lakes Trekking. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

Manaslu & Tsum Valley Hidden Lake trekking starts taking an early morning drive to Nepal Mid-West, as journey leads on main Nepal highway past many interesting towns and villages with farms to reach at Arughat around Gorkha district. From here drive continues following Buri-Gandaki River upstream within warm-low areas of paddy fields and terraces to reach Soti-Khola.
From here journey continues for another short hours past cultivated terrace of Lapbesi upper village as our drive descends to a wide, sandy riverbed following a trail that meanders below a steep, craggy valley side.
Then drive climb to Macha Khola for overnight stop, a village with number of teashops and small lodge, Macha Khola means a Fish Stream.

Adventure starts from Macha-Khola village, morning walk past interesting farm villages around cultivated crop fields, as route leads over Macha Khola (Fish stream) where name of the village comes from, as walk follows upstream to Khola-Bensi village at Tatopani a place with natural 'hot spring'.
Time permitting enjoy the warm refreshing bathe, and continue walk on wide field to Lauri stream, crossing a bridge and then climb to high ridge then down to Yara Khola. From here an hour reach you at Jagat village for overnight stop, a nice farm village with many nice simple lodge with shops and stores.

From Jagat morning walk downhill on stone steps to a river, and then climb towards terraced hillside at Saguleri, facing view of Sringi Himal 7,187 m, walk continues with few ups and down then cross a bridge above Buri-Gandaki River.
After few hour of continues walk, as trail winds up to Philim a village with rich cultivated fields and farm terraces, from here walk past farm villages as climb leads to a rocky ridge top, covered with bamboo forest then reach a small settlement at Eklai Bhatti means a place with lonely Inn, at present more lodges and shops.
A refreshing stop then continue walk to Lokpa, as our route divert heading North West East on leaving the main Manaslu circuit trail, towards our overnight stop at Lokpa. From here within strong Buddhism culture as you come across prayer monuments.

Today our route enters Tsum Valley as morning walk continues towards a narrow gorge, a short descend with steep climb into rhododendron and pine forest as walk head past small farm villages. A slow climb takes you above a stream to Chumling village for first overnight stop within Tsum Valley.

From here morning walk heads further east, as adventure continues past
small farm areas and villages facing superb views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal.

Our route heads down to cross a bridge above Smatiking Khola, and then finally
reaching Chokan-Paro for overnight stop. A nice moderate village with views of
surrounding beautiful landscapes and snow peaks.

Today walks is quite long but exciting as route leads to the main nice village at
Nile, as morning begins entering inner areas of Tsum valley.

As adventure continues reaching high windswept country around open wide
valley, as the whole area changes to dry dramatic scenery similar to Tibetan
landscapes. Tree lines drops to smaller few juniper bush, as journey continues
along with grand views of towering Ganesh and Manaslu Himal.

Finally our great scenic day walks slowly ends on reaching Nile, before Nile an
options for short side trip to a meditation cave of great saint and Guru Millerepa
great Buddhist figure of 11th century, Millerepa a poet, singer and tantric guru
his folk songs and poems still remembered by Tibetans and follower of Millerepa
till present day.

Morning from Nile, towards our main highlight of the adventure to Mu Gompa,
having good breakfast start morning walk with slow climb towards, arid dry
country overlooking views of high peaks towards North, East and West direction.
Slowly walk reaches at Mu Gompa. One of the oldest monastery around Tsum,
an interesting place with time enjoy tour of the monastery and it’s scenic
surroundings. Afternoon explore around Mu Gompa area similar to high Tibetan
Plateau. A wide seasonal yak pastures with Lungdang Glacier to the east and high
peaks in all directions.

Return journey retracing Chulle and Phurbe on the east bank of Shiar Khola / stream to reach Burgi village. Walk leads down and ups past spread out smaller
settlements of Yak herders, then end day walk in a small windblown village at Burgi with overnight in a small nice and simple lodge.

From Burgi village, trek leads heading back past on the same trail for short
Distance, and then our route leads to another famous historic Lungdang Gompa.
As walk heads south to cross a bridge to the west bank and pass gain through
Chhokang Paro. A descend to a Gompa and cross a wooden bridge over Siyar
Khola / stream, then walk to Domje. From here climb through pine and
Rhododendron forest coming across a Mani walls and prayers flag to Lungdang
Gompa. A nunnery with 40 nuns, where you can observe a small prayer ceremony
in the evening, overnight in a small simple lodge.

After a wonderful time around Tsum valley and at nice areas of Lungdang Gompa
return journey back to Domje, crossing Lungdang Khola and the head south
to Shair Khola. As climb lead over deep gorges to cross a bridge then reaching at
Ripchet. From here descend on steep stairs to Ekle Bhatti and to the river where
climb takes you into forest to Lokpa for overnight halt, before heading towards
down south towards warmer farm areas.

Today a moderate walks of less than six hours to Jagat village, morning downhill
past Deng village, entering into extensive farm areas at Philim a large village of
mixed hill tribes. From here continue downhill walking into forested area and
then back to open farm land on reaching at Jagat in the comfort of nice lodge.

Last day walk of the adventure, on leaving Jagat hill village downhill following
Budi Gandaki River to Tatopani. Here again with time to refresh in the hot spring
at Tatopani. Walk continues towards Khorlabesi and then cross Tharo Khola
flowing in a rocky ravine. Then a long descend to the river and continue to
Maccha Khola for last overnight halt.

Morning on leaving Machha-Khola taking a local vehicle suitable for rough country
road, as drive continues past Soti-Khola and then a large farm town of Arughat.
From Arughat town the drive gets better on good track towards Dhading Besi
town, as ride continues towards Trisuli River and over the bridge to Maleku town
and then on main highway to Kathmandu. On arrival at the hotel check into your
lovely rooms. Rest of the evening at leisure after a long day interesting drive.

A free day one can relax or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities and shopping souvenirs.

Last day in Nepal as per your international flight time, our staff and guide transfer you to the airport for homeward bound. After a great memorable experience and adventure around Tsum Valley trekking.

01: When is the best time for Tsum Valley Trek?

The best time for Tsum Valley trekking is the spring season from March till May and autumn/fall times. Where days are clear for excellent views and walks, cold morning and late afternoon till night time. Can expect snow sometime during the trek above 2,500 m high.

02: What kind of exercise and physical fitness do you recommend?

For normal moderate to adventurous grade trekking, a simple exercise of jogging-aerobic-Zumba and walking up and down the staircase, as this trek leads to Ups and Downhill walks.
The exercise should be practiced for a minimum of 2 weeks or a month on booking the trips with us and we need your medical reports from your doctor as well.

03: How are the foods and accommodation on treks?

On this trek to Tsum Valley mountain areas that offer good facilities of lodges in the early days known as Tea-House. Most lodges offer Nepalese Dal-Bhat (boiled rice, lentil soups with mild veg curry and pickles), and serve continental, Chinese, and Indian meals also.
Rooms are nice and warm in most places, as the walk reaches a higher altitude above 3,000 m the accommodation can be limited sometimes in high season, where single rooms will be hard to get, all rooms are neat and clean with attached or common bathrooms with hot/cold showers.
Large cozy dining rooms with soft music in a healthy environment and local warm hospitality rooming facing views of mountains and beautiful scenery of landscapes decorated with local traditional ways.
In remote areas like Tsum Valley the lodge are very simple and basic with a limited food menu.

04: How safe is food and drinking waters on trekking?

In all lodges, meals are prepared hygienically with nutritious foods served, as for drinking water is well boiled and filtered, and cooled to consume our guide also makes sure that is perfectly boiled, on treks we try to avoid plastic mineral water due to waste and un eco-friendly, people can buy bottled water only is special and desperate situations.

05: If someone gets very sick on treks what will happen?

On treks for severe and emergency situations, our guide will contact the head office for immediate medical evacuation by other means of transport with helicopter service for quick recovery. For quick and immediate evacuation one should obtain a medical insurance policy to cover all medical, travel, and Heli evacuation when required in such situations.
For AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) getting the victims downhill to a much safer elevation and putting the patient on Gamma / Pressure Bags, we do carry Oxygen for normal emergency purposes for severe cases heading Down-Down and Down or immediate evacuation in Helicopter to Kathmandu.

06: How are the guide and staff to take care on treks?

All our Brown Bear Trail guides and staff are very attentive and active with decades of experience on trek/ climb and with the tourism industry, our guides are well versed in eco-trekking, and responsible tourism as well as fully trained in medical for smaller medical situations and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
Our staff and guides have good knowledge of local culture, customs, and religions as well the history of the areas with well versed in flora and fauna also, which they will share and provide information to keep you well updated on the areas of trekking.

07: How are the Networks for Cell / Mobile Phones and other accessories?

Since last few decades of time where most rural villages at present have proper communication either cell- phone (mobile) or STD / ISTD. Our guides will be in touch with the head office through his cell phone.
Sometimes Cell-Phone and Sat Phones can get disturbed, especially around mountainous countries with deep gorges and valleys. Chances of working cell-phone are most effective using local SIM cards. As for other accessories plugs to fit in to recharge your camera and cell phones, nearly all lodges on trekking do have small hydro or solar electricity, which allows you at extra cost to charge the batteries.

08: How much money to carry on the treks?

Depending upon your choices of extra expenses on refreshments drinks/snacks on routes as well as buying local souvenirs, hard drinks and beers can be expensive in higher altitude villages than in lower areas, (try to avoid hard drinks and beer on routes higher altitude for safe trekking it can cause de-hydrations and make problem with altitude sickness.
On the way back downhill one can enjoy drinking at the end of the treks, an average of NRS 300-400 per day (just in case you need to spend for your own personal use), otherwise all meals and accommodation will be included in the package.
Tipping and gratitude after the treks at your own will (however a long history and traditions in trekking/climbing or in the tour where staff-guides-porters will expect tipping from the services provided).
