Best seasons for Rara Lake to Jomsom via Upper Dolpo Trek:
The best time for this long and wonderful adventure is in the spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.
Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.
March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are shorter with sun-light hours, morning, late afternoon, and nighttime temperatures drop to freezing cold around the higher region with the bright starry night sky. Chances of snow on trails as well on passes.
Religion and Culture:
Far North West Nepal around Rara Lake, Mugu area and Dolpo districts populated by Bhotia and Hindu Thakuri, Roka Chettries the mid-hill tribes. The higher region of Mugu to Dolpo and Mustang areas, populated by Dolpa people of Tibetan origin, follows strong Buddhism religion as well Bon a pre-Buddhism sect with an age-old culture similar to their predecessors Tibetan, on this trek, you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home are adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments.

Rara Lake to Jomsom via Upper Dolpo Trekking, an epic journey and exclusive adventure around Nepal Far Wild West. Where you will be away from human civilization and villages for a week in the harmony of mountain wilderness.
Rara Lake to Jomsom via Upper Dolpo Trekking covers the most beautiful remote areas of Western Nepal Himalayas. The first part of the journey takes you to beautiful Rara Lake the largest and deepest lake in Nepal. An area of 10.8 sq. km at 2,990 m high, a picturesque country to visit for once in a lifetime experience.
The adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a city located Far South West Nepal of sub-tropical climate. From Nepalgunj city airport on connecting flight to land at Talcha small airstrip the gateway to Rara Lake.
A lovely walk to start our adventure on a gradual winding path with few ups and down to Rara Lakeshore. The Lake falls with Rara National Park the smallest protected area of 106 sq. km. within the district of Mugu.
After a wonderful time around Rara Lake, from here our real adventure of more than four weeks starts. A moderate trek till Rara to begin with, from here onward into a wild country where the trail leads to adventurous walks.
One of the longest adventures around Far West Himalaya of month-long trekking, and crossing more than dozen of high passes. From Mugu climb towards high hills through beautiful forest of pine, spruce, and firs, to enter wild country around Dolpo. Where tree lines fade for short juniper bush as walks lead to the highest pass of the adventure. Crossing over Nyingma Gyalzen-La 5, 563 m and Yala-La pass 5, 414 m to reach Upper Dolpa at Shey Gompa.
Shey Gompa is also called Crystal Monastery due to its location close to holy crystal mountain. An amazing peak embedded with quartz and semi-precious stones, the Shey Gompa is a Buddhist monastery 4,200 m high. Which was built in the 11th Century, the spiritual hub of Dolpo the whole area is a blend of colors and textures. A windswept country with sculpted gorge and monasteries of both Buddhist and Bon-Po a sect that follows shamanistic rituals.
Spending an exciting and interesting time at Shey Gompa, the return journey takes you down and ups to windblown villages. The walk continues through Namgung and Saldang villages crossing high Shey-La Pass, a nice large settlement similar to Tibetan-style houses. As route leads further eastward where trails to inner Dolpo and Mustang separates following high ridges. Crossing Sangda-La Pass and high Niwar-La to reach Phalyak via another last pass of Bhima Lojun-La.
Enjoy the walk with fascinating views of massive Dhaulagiri Himalaya with Nilgiri peaks, as the route leads closer to Kaligandaki River. Slowly our adventure comes to an end with a long descend towards the Mustang area at Jomsom town and back to civilization. After being around the rugged country and isolated remote villages, a great change on reaching main busy trail at Jomsom.
Jomsom is a moderate size town and headquarters of Mustang district, located on the old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route to Tibet. Where the caravan trail from Nepal to Tibet extends beyond Upper Mustang, where trade still exists.
A nice town populated by Thakali people the main indigenous tribe of Kaligandaki River valley around Lower Mustang. At Jomsom for last overnight in the comfort of the lovely lodge, next morning a short flight brings you to Pokhara.
Pokhara is a scenic city, blessed with natural beauty in the close shadow of massive Annapurna Himalaya with serene lakes. From Pokhara an exciting flight to Kathmandu to complete our mesmerizing adventure Rara Lake to Jomsom via Upper Dolpo Trekking.
