Overview

Nubra valley, a short adventure around far west of Ladakh Himalaya around Zaskar and close to Karakoram Range of peaks.

 

Ladakh, a beautiful country located in North West India and a Union territory of India, near Jammu Kashmir. As well extends the border with South West Tibet / China, with similar landscapes of Tibetan vast plateau. Where Buddhism is the dominion religion of Ladakh and similar culture and custom of Tibet, also known as ‘Little Tibet’.

 

Ladakh name means the land of high passes, with high Himalayan peaks which makes the country picturesque. Nubra valley trek leads you to remote isolated villages, an opportunity to witness the rural farm life of the villagers.

The Nubra is one of the most beautiful valleys of Ladakh, also called by the ancient name Dumra. Means a valley of flowers and orchard, a fascinating valley to explore crossing high Lasermo-La Pass facing marvelous vista.

 

Nubra valley trekking is an adventure of less than a week, before starting the trek allowing time in Leh. The capital of Ladakh is at 3,500 m high, a perfect height for acclimatization, as well as to explore around Leh. Where tour takes around exciting sites of great historical and cultural interest visiting its ancient monasteries and old fort palace. Tour in and around Leh and beyond at Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis Monasteries, lovely places as well for familiarization.

 

As you will gain more knowledge of local culture, customs, before starting the adventure to Nubra Valley for wonderful trekking. After an interesting time at Leh visiting impressive places, and then driving beyond Leh towards one of the highest passes. Drive leads over Khardung-La Pass at 5,359 m / 17,582 feet high, and then towards Nubra valley at Hundar. From here our adventurous walk begins heading due west facing magnificent views of the snow-capped mountain range. Where drive takes you north of Leh towards the gateway of Shyok and Nubra valleys. The only areas where Bactrian camels are found, apart from the Gobi desert of Mongolia and Northern China.

 

The walk begins from Hundar after an interesting visit to Chomur village and Diskit, as adventure follows Yak herder village. At Drok Gongma and Yokma with a grand view of Saser Kangri peak, the trail leads into the scenic valley. Following the sandy dunes of Hunder, around high altitude desert-like reminds trekkers of the age-old Silk Route era of times. The adventure leads to the North and South base camp of high Lasermo-La within stunning landscapes scenery. As you enter the country of orchards and valley of flowers with lovely isolated farm villages of cattle herders.

 

Slowly walk head across Lasermo-La Pass 5,438 m to Phyang Phu, then at Murabak, where our wonderful Nubra valley concludes. From Murabak heading back to Leh taking an exciting drive, after a memorable short adventure on Nubra Valley Trekking.

Day 01:          Arrival at Leh / Ladakh 3, 500 m Kushok Bakula Rimpoche

Day 02:          A day in Leh for acclimatization and tour of Leh former
palace, Shanti Stupa overnight in View Point Hotel.
Day 03:          At Leh tour of Shey, Thiksey, and Hemis Monastery.
Day 04:          Drive to Nubra 3,160 m via Khardung-La Pass 5,359 m.
Day 05:          Morning tour of Chomur village and at Diskit.
Day 06:          Drive and trek from Hunder to Hunder Dok 4,061 m – 06 hrs.

Best seasons for Nubra Valley Trekking:

 

The best time for this wonderful adventurous trekking is from late spring and early autumn seasons, from mid-April and May, as well during the monsoon time of June to mid-September. As Ladakh and Nubra valley falls within rain-shadow, where heavy black monsoon clouds are blocked by Himalaya high mountains.

 

April & May are fine clear days most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes.

Autumn / fall is another best time for treks and tours around Ladakh, with a fine clear day. But days are shorter due to sunlight hours can be freezing cold, especially in the morning, and night times will be clear with bright starry nights. Chances of snowfall during the walk sometimes.

 

For interested people can visit Ladakh for a tour and trekking during summer times of June to August also. As Ladakh falls within rain shadow area, where monsoon dark rain clouds blocked by the great Himalayas. That is why Ladakh most areas are dry with less rainfall.

 

Religion and Culture:

Ladakh and the North West Himalaya are populated by Ladakhi people descendants of a mixed tribal race of Mons of North India, and Dards of Baltistan with Mongols of Central Asia. History shows the Mons were the first immigrants, followed by Dards who founded different settlements in the Indus valley.

Ladakh is a country of strong Buddhism religion and culture similar to the Tibetan heritage of ancient Buddhism custom, where one can visit its many old monasteries of great religious significance.

 

 

Itinerary

Morning after a short scenic of an hour flight to Leh from Delhi, on arrival at Leh, Ladakh Kushok Bakula Rimpoche. As you head outside the air terminal, our staff and guide receives you for short drive in the heart of Leh town to your Hotels. Afternoon free at leisure, optional walk to the center of Leh and its market.

At Leh, for acclimatization and for exciting tour at places of interest, Leh has a vast range of main bazaar on the street colorful local fruits and vegetables vendors. The streets are busy with roadside restaurant, cafes and craft shops. The old Leh Palace stands on the top of the high hill overlooking the Leh city and its valley. The white Peace (Shanti) Stupa stands nearby high on hill which is worth a visit for the great views of Leh. The world's highest Polo ground located beyond the main bus station, rest of the day free at leisure to browse around Leh, Ladakh capital.

Morning after breakfast, a full day tour taking a drive to Hemis, one of the largest and wealthiest monasteries in Ladakh with more than 150 monks; an annual Hemis festival is held. The monastery, stands in a gorge surrounded by mountain scenery, built in 18th Century. On the way back to Leh visit Thiksey Gompa built in 16th Century, situated on a hill top. The monastery enriched with Tibetan-style books, a huge Buddha statue and excellent works of arts.
Last stop on the way back to Leh, tour of ruined Shey Palace once a summer palace of the pre-Tibetan kings. Shey and its fort also known as Lachen Palkar Palace, the massive nine-story stone structure lies at the base of the Tsemo ridge and towers over the old town. Built by King Senge Namgyal during 15th till 17th Centuary in a Tibetan style.
The palace monastery houses a large, bronze, blue haired Buddha statue and then drive to Leh hotel for overnight.

Leaving Leh for our adventure to Nubra valley, morning drive after a good breakfast. An interesting and scenic ride for near 5 hours crossing one of the world highest motorable pass of Khardungla at 5, 596 m/18,360 feet high.
As drive heads down to a wide and fertile Nubra valley, during overland journey with few short stop for photos as well visiting the hot springs at Panamic and walk up to Samstaling monastery. Then reaching at Nubra valley the starting point of our trek.

Morning tour of Chomur village, and visit Diskit isolated small monastery perched on a hill top. After the tour join with trekking staff, where our tented camping is set near a wide field for overnight, with time for short hike and to explore around this wild country.

From this small cattle and yak herder settlement, few hour drive to Hunder village
where all camping gear and baggage loaded on a mule and ponies, then start the trek. As route leads to cross Hundar bridge walk follows along the river, facing grand landscape and into a gorge. Where path becomes narrow and steep at Dzongpa. Walk continues along a side valley towards a high point between Hundar and Skarchen, from here descend and continue along the river to reach at Hunder Dok following a pleasant path to Hundar Dok village.
A nice scenic spot with plantations of flowers and wide barley fields, overnight camp near the village close by the river, after a wonderful first day walk.

A long day walk of the adventure, probably carrying pack lunch as well having hearty breakfast in the camp, prepared by our expert camping chef’ and kitchen hands. Start the morning heading north, as path follows Thanglasgo valley following a small stream through pastures with views of surrounding snow peaks to the junction of the Thanglasgo and Sniu Sumdo valleys. Walk continues past Sniu Sumdo yak herders camp around lovely grassy spot, after continues trek with some refreshing break reach a nice green summer grazing pastures at the North base of Lasermo-La for overnight camp.

After a pleasant overnight stop on a lovely valley, another exciting and interesting trek following a small stream to reach a terminal moraine of glacier, as route leads to a flat glacier towards high south camp. As climb starts to steep slope facing grand views of surrounding beautiful country landscapes. After a strenuous climb reach on top Lasermo-La, the highest point of the adventure on treks.
Enjoy the dramatic scenery of Nubru valley with high snow-capped peaks.

Morning clearing the camp, facing close view of Dawa peak walk follows a river upstream on a well-defined trail of high Nubru valley full with spread out meadows, encountering Yaks and Dzomo’s grazing around the pasture field.
Walk finally descend to Phyiang valley where our overnight camp is set close to Phyang Sumdo after an exciting walk of more than 6 hours.

Last and final day walk of the adventure, leaving the camp with last camping breakfast, morning walk follows a nice level path down the valley as route leads to the end of trekking on reaching at Murabak village. Having rest and bidding farewell to mule and pony drivers, then board in a vehicle for exciting drive of few hour to Leh with tour of interesting old Phyang Monastery. After three or more exciting drive reaching at Leh, for last overnight at Ladakh.

Depending upon the flight time, guide and staff transfer you for a short drive to the airport for flight to Delhi after a memorable adventure and experience on Nubra Valley trekking.

The weather is fine in most parts of Ladakh, however, Himalayan weather sometimes is unpredictable. Depends upon the region of trekking and other holidays in Ladakh North West India as altitude wise, higher than 3,000 meters day times are sunny most of the time with cooler morning and evening time.
Ladakh with four main seasons spring from March to May and summer / Monsoon starts from June to August. Includes autumn/fall from September to November, as well as winter from December to February.

03: What ages does the company allows for trekking?

Age is no bar in all our trekking adventures, we have space for all ages from children from 5 to 70 years old person, as long one is physically, medically, and mentally fit. In treks that involve high passes of over 5,000 meters then we consider the age groups.

04: How are the foods and accommodation on trekking?

Most places around Ladakh due to its remote and isolated region, trekking with tented camping. Staying in the lodge where available, but using tented camping on most treks and climbing peaks in Ladakh.

Few trekking regions have good lodge facilities with excellent, neat, and cozy lodges. During camping our cook will provide excellent home-cooked food as per the areas of trekking. Trekkers will be delighted to find food from Continental, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Tibetan, and Nepali meals as well fresh bakery products in some time. All meals are cooked in a healthy and hygienic manner using LPG cooking gas or in kerosene stoves. Meals are served in a large dining tent as per the size of the group, we carry gas lamps to light the dining tents.

05: What happens if one is sick on trek?

Our guides are fully prepared for this kind of situation, we carry a medical kit and the guides have gone through yearly medical training, if it’s very serious needs to be evacuated by any means of transport like a helicopter the safe and quickest way(for this reason one should have strong travel/ medical insurance to cover this extra expenses) we will contact our helicopter companies to uplift and evacuate and then bring back to the nearest hospital and medical care or in Leh depending upon distance and circumstances.

06: What to expect on trekking?

Depending upon the area of trekking routes as Ladakh is a wild country of high hills and downhill, so on the normal trek, there are many ups and downs walking with few gradual trails. Trekking routes encounter several mid hills and traditional villages full of culture and religions with shrines, monasteries with prayer symbol like Mani, and stupa along the walks, and villagers are friendly and greet you with smiles.

07: Is there facilities to re-charge our electronic items as well with Wi Fi?

Internet, Wi-Fi, and phone are available around every village and large settlement on route main trekking areas. Sometimes the internet and WI-FI are slow and might be disturbing due to weather-wise.

As well depending on the landscapes around the gorge and deep valleys, the internet and WI-FI will not reach the areas. One must be prepared and wait until you reach certain high places, where the communication works.

Electricity available run by hydro-power, as well solar power nearly in all main villages on route trekking. Only around remote areas where camping is required, will not have electricity facilities or Wi Fi for some days.

At every lodges charging fees includes as per hour and per items, the price differs from one place to another.

08: Can we have hot showers on trekking?

Hot / Cold showers are available in every lodges that you stay overnights mainly around popular trekking routes. All lodges charge some amount for using hot-showers in all standard lodges. But on camping days there will be no hot-showers available, but we can provide a shower tents on request.
