Overview

Danphe Sail Peak Trek and Climb take you on top at 6,103 m and 20,023 feet high. Located around remote hidden corners of Upper Dolpo with Far West Neaway from human settlements and villages. An adventure within complete wilderness enclosed within high dry terrains and mountains with snow-clad peaks.
Truly a great adventure of once in a lifetime experience, the trek is quite different. It is more of an exploration than a normal country walk, as the area of Upper Dolpo is raw and explored. Only very few adventurers and explorers have seldom ventured around the remote pockets around the wild areas of Western Himalaya. Similarly, Danphe Sail Peak is also an unknown mountain to many adventurers and trekkers, hidden from the rest of the world.
An exciting adventure that leads to a pristine country in the harmony of a tranquil surrounding environment, away from human civilization.

Danphe Sail Peak Climbing grade is PD means ‘Per Difficule’ as classified from French / Swiss Alpine Climbing System. A peak with the straight-forward route to the summit facing some technical effort, and then with a gradual climb to the top.
Adventure to Danphe Sail Peak Climb begins with a sweeping scenic flight to Far South West at Nepalgunj city airport. Where another connecting flight takes you to our starting point of the adventure at Jhupal at Dolpo. On reaching Jhupal small airstrip, then journey follows to Dunai headquarter and the main town of Dolpo region. From Dunai walk follows towards our destinations, as route leads with ups and down past lovely farm villages. As well walk leads to our first highlight at beautiful Phoksundo Lake near nice Ringmo village.
At Phoksundo Lake enjoying a rest day, exploring around the beautiful lake, and visiting Ringmo village adorned with local culture. From Phoksundo Lake adventure continues heading higher to cross Kang-La Pass, then reaching another highlight at Shey Gompa. Located in a wild scenic country close to Crystal Mountain, and the Gompa known as Crystal Monastery also.
An interesting and mystical place within windswept dry terrain and yet beautiful, with time here to visit the old monastery.

The Gompa is the main major religious spot for Dolpo villagers, where every four years a spiritual event takes place.
After an interesting and pleasant time at Shey Gompa, the adventure leads towards our main highlight at Danphe Sail Peak. As route follows around arid and barren landscapes with walls of red and brown canyon to Tora small village.
An isolated settlement of yak and cattle herders with an old Gompa called Samling, the walk follows to Kuwa. The last human settlement around the remote area of Dolpo and well hidden from the rest of the country.
A few days walk to our final destination around dry terrain, within an extension of the vast plateau of South West Tibet. On reaching our main goal and highlights at stunning looking Danphe Sail Peak base camp. Herewith is time for rest and preparation for the climb, checking gear with some practice exercise before the final ascent.
We have spared two days for the climb, with extra high camp to make the climb accessible and shorter. On a clear fine morning before dawn, start the climb following a lead guide over the rocky moraine of ice and snow.

A straightforward climb, where all members should be well equipped with proper gear for a safe ascent to the summit. The climb leads to strenuous uphill on rock and ice ledge with few technical sections to tackle, then reaching on top.
From the summit of Danphe Sail Peak enjoy the view of Kanjibroba Himal with the Dhaulagiri range in the far-east horizon. After a great struggle with strenuous effort on reaching the summit, then descend safely back to base camp.
Return journey on an alternative route heading down and up to reach the main trail towards the main villages of Saldang. An interesting settlement amidst red mud canyon and then towards Jeng-La pass, then reaching at lovely Tokyu village.

One of the largest villages within Lower and Inner Dolpa with 20 smaller villages’ makes Tokyu Gaon. The biggest and nice village around Dho Tarap valley with interesting monasteries to explore around, steeped with colorful cultures.
From here onward on pleasant path Dho Tarap large valley following a river that enters into a narrow gorge. As the adventure continues towards Tarakot a village of historical and religious importance, at one time stood as a fort.
Hence the name tagged as Kot means a fortress guarding against intruders around the 12th to 18th Century during the Malla regime. After a wonderful time at Tarakot village finally walk takes you back to Dunai town and then to Jhupal. Where our adventurous trek and climb to Danphe Sail Peak complete, taking a flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Please Note:
As this adventurous trek is different to other normal trekking, where trekking hours, altitude and places for overnight camp might differ on actual walk.
This trek is more of an exploration around least visited region of Dolpo region within undisturbed and pristine location.
Best seasons for Danphe Sail Peak and Dolpo Trek:

The best time for this long and wonderful adventure is in the spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.
Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.
March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are shorter with sun-light hours, morning, late afternoon, and nighttime temperatures drop to freezing cold around the higher region with the bright starry night sky. Chances of snow on trails as well on passes. Upper Dolpo and climb Danphe Sail Peak can be visited during monsoon time of June to August also, as Dolpo area falls within rain shadow area. Where southern monsoon dark rain clouds blocked by high Himalayan mountain range that is why the area is mostly dry and arid like a moon-scape.
Religion and Culture:

Far North West Nepal around Jumla and Dolpo districts populated by Bhotia and Hindu Thakuri, Roka Chettries the mid-hill tribes. The higher region around Dolpo, inhabited by the Bhot people of Tibetan origin, follows strong Buddhism religion as well Bon a pre-Buddhism sect with an age-old culture similar to their predecessors Tibetan. On this trek and climb you will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments with old monasteries of great cultural and religious interest.

Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, received by our guides and staff for short transfer to your hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of
Danphe Sail Peak Trek & Climb. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges, camping on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for next day trek and climb preparation and with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

As per flight time for Nepalgunj transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for sweeping 50 mins flight to Far South West Nepal at Nepalgunj city, a warm semi-tropical climate area close to Indian border on reaching at Nepalgunj transfer to a nice hotel within the city area, with time for short walk around.

After an early breakfast transfer to Nepalgunj airport for a short connecting flight to Jhupal airport in Dolpo. Another scenic flight with views of Western Himalaya range of peaks, on landing at Jhupal received by our trekking staff and then board in a vehicle for short drive to Dunai for overnight stop. Dunai the headquarter town of Dolpo district with many simple lodge for overnight stay here time for short walk around Dunai, an interesting place to witness the local culture of both Hindu and Buddhism religion and custom.

From Dunai, walk through market to cross a bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then climb over a ridge top above Phoksundo River valley, facing views of Kagmara peak.
On reaching the top downhill past farm villages lined with walnut trees, as walk heads close to Dhera a small cattle herders settlements. From here short climb towards Raha-Gaon village of Thakuri a Hindu tribe.
Walk downhill to a forested area to Chepkpa, a small farm village for first overnight stop and camping.

After a pleasant overnight in Chepkpa, close to Ankhe village walk starts with short climb, then descend to a river bank, as climb continues on leaving the forest behind, and then downhill to forest as walk heads upstream to Ryajik village, journey leads further to Samdua for overnight stop near the entrance of Phoksundo National Park.

Today walk leads to our first highlight destination at Phoksundo Lake, as route head past Pungmo Khola (stream) valley. Following Pungmo Khola downhill into pine and birch tree to upper side of Phoksundo Khola.
After a short break walk to Ringmo village, an interesting village of Tibetan origin with similar life style and culture with mud plastered Chorten and Mani (prayer) walls of Bon sect and Buddhist religion. Having a short rest walk to Phoksundo Lake for overnight camp by the bank of turquoise colored Phoksundo Lake.

A lovely place for rest day, with time to enjoy beautiful scenery of landscapes with peaks of Kagmara Himal. Explore nice Ringmo village of immense culture, a short distance from the lake and camp site.

Morning walk from this beautiful sport heads higher areas toward Upper Dolpo as route leads contouring a rocky ledge on unsteady path to west side of the lake then walk past summer pasture, which opens into a wide valley around Phoksundo Khola / stream for overnight camp close to a stream.

From here onwards adventure leads north above Phoksundo Khola walk follows to a steep climb on a ridge top, facing views of wide green valley and of Kang-La pass towards our destination Shey Gompa.
Overnight camping is placed on a nice green field close to the base of Kang-la pass around complete isolation of mountain wilderness.

Today climb to the highest point of the adventure, as morning walk starts towards our next destination Shey Gompa, climb continues on stone and rocky path to reach on top Kang-La pass at 5,350 meters / 17,655 feet, the highest spot of the adventure. From the pass enjoy views of beautiful landscapes with snow peaks as far towards Mt. Dhaulagiri in the east. After an enjoyable rest descend to the bottom by the river, then walk past cattle herder camps coming across Buddhist prayer monuments of Chorten and Mani.
As walk continues, then reaching our final destination at Shey Gompa situated close the bottom of Crystal Mountain, regarded as Holy Mountain.

A rest day around this serene location well hidden from rest of the world, enjoy the day with short hike around this unique country and visit Shey Gompa one of the oldest and famous religious site, the Gompa also called Crystal Monastery due to its nearness from the Crystal Mountain.

From Shey Gompa after an interesting time with rest day to explore around and visiting the monastery of great cultural and religious interest. Morning on leaving the Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain, walk leads down on isolated path with wind-blown eroded cliffs, on dusty trail to reach a small settlement at Tora, a place with a Gompa/monastery within this windswept village for overnight camp.

Walk follows towards remote corners of Dolpo, around less frequented area by main flow of trekkers. As route leads towards into isolated corners, however a short day walk to Bhijer a small Yak herders settlement for overnight camp and lunch stop. Rest of the afternoon relax and explore around this wild country.

After a pleasant stay at Bhijer, a long day walk towards our main destination around the far remote pockets, as walk proceeds on windswept terrain to cross a small pass over Yambur-La facing tremendous scenery of surrounding landscapes with distant snow peaks. From the top head down to a valley with grassy field to
camp at Yak Kharka, a small temporary shelter of cattle herders.

Adventure gets closer towards our major highlights, as morning walk leads far and away towards the remote part of Dolpo area. Following a faint dusty track within arid, barren terrain then reaching a small Kuwa village for overnight stop, the last human settlement on route Danphe Sail Peak area.

Morning walk follows a vague hardly trekked by outsiders or villagers, except by Yak herder, as walk leads towards complete wilderness with only the sound of strong wind, then reaching a small grassy meadow for possible overnight camp.

Onwards to our major destination as walk follows around wild and beautiful harsh arid country, where only few outsiders might have explored this remote isolated area. A huge area, an extension of vast Tibetan South West plateau as walk gets closer to our base camp, finding a suitable level ground to set our overnight camps for some days.

Free day at base camp to scout and check the route of the climb, as well preparation for the final ascent and checking the climbing equipment and practice using the right tool for the climb on ice and rocks. Rest of the day relax and enjoy the surrounding dramatic scenery.

From the base camp, walk and climb further close towards Danphe Sail Peak as route leads over rocky moraine of ice and snow, and then finding a suitable level ground, clearing the rocks to set our High or Advance Camp. Adding an extra camp will make the climb to the summit much easier and accessible, rest of the day relax and preparation for the final ascent.

Start early morning before crack of dawn, the climb grade is PD / Per Difficule as per French and Swiss Alpine Climbing Classification. A straight-forward climb over rocky area with snow and ice slopes with some technical sections to negotiate.
Rest of the climb after tackling the tough portion is gradual with steep climb to the summit of Danphe Sail. Enjoy the glorious super panorama of far eastern and western snow peaks of Kagmara, Kanjibroba with Dhaulagiri Himal towards far eastern horizon. After a successful ascent descent is make on the safe route all the way to base camp.

We have reserved two days to reach back into human life at Kuwa village, retrace the journey back on the same interesting and exciting route to Kuwa village for last overnight stop around this wild remote country.

From Kuwa village back on the main trail to Bhijer, retracing the route past cattle herder camps, on leaving the Kuwa village towards Bhijer village.

On reaching back on the main trail as used by the villagers, and few group of trekkers on the way to Saldang village, from Shey Gompa. Walk follows on gradual path for some hours then reaching at the base of small pass of Neng-La for overnight camp.

From the isolated campsite, morning steep climb to Neng-La Pass, facing grand views of Upper and Inner Dolpo landscapes with snow clad peaks.
After a brief stop on top, downhill on dusty windswept trails to Saldang village for overnight stop, an impressive and largest village around Upper Dolpo region, situated on higher side of a wide plateau within windswept terrain of rocky hills and high mud cliffs.

Morning walk follows Nang Chu River with few short climb and descend past Sugu-Gaon and Dechen Lapran, a Yak herders camp. From here on gradual path to overnight camp at Cha-Gaon village, here visit the old Rapa Gompa of pre- sect of Buddhism known as Bonpa.

From Cha-Gaon, walk starts heading due south following Dachu Khola and beyond, after crossing on the same route as walk follows a stream past farm fields, and then end the day walk on reaching Yak herder temporary settlement for overnight camp, within a wild country.

Walk today heading further south to the base of Jyanta-la pass, after a short rest a steep climb reach you on top of the pass. Offers excellent views of Mt. Dhaulagiri range, and then descend to the base of the pass for overnight camp on route Tokyu village.

After crossing Jeng-La on the way back to Dunai and Jhupal, from the base of Numa-La, morning starts with steep climb to a small ridge offers views of
Mt. Dhaulagiri range, and then descend to Modo valley, time permitting visit the monastery, here the trail from Upper and Lower Dolpo joins.
After Modo and Khanger few hours of good walk to Tokyu-Gaon for overnight, this is one of the most impressive and interesting village of Dolpa area, consist of more than ten villages and nice tended farm fields with old impressive monasteries.

After an exciting and pleasant overnight stop at Tokyu Gaon, morning walk downhill to Tarap Chu on a wide green valley, a scenic and longest valley around Dolpo area stretches about 20 km. As walk continues coming across Yak man temporary settlements, then finally ending the day on reaching at Dho Tarap for overnight stop. An interesting village inhabited by mixed people of Tibetan origin and Magar hill tribe of western Nepal.

From Dho Tarap, morning starts with long descend to Tarap valley, follows a river Tarap Chu most of the way till it joins Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village.
Walk past Langa a place with beautiful cascading waterfalls, then head due south on the trail to Sisaul and Kesila a small area of Yak herder temporary camps then to our overnight camp near overhanging rock cave of Pivo.

Today walks takes you on Tarap valley, as route enters a narrow gorge with some juniper and wild rose bushes, walk continues past Tol-Tol a place.
Around the area chances of spotting some wild life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals. Walk leads further on then reaching a small village of Khani-Gaon for overnight stop after a long interesting day walk.

Adventure gets closer to the end of our journey as morning walk follows down at the confluence of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola / streams, as route leads further and finding a good spot for overnight camp by the river after an exciting walks.

Start the morning walk past smaller villages and then into a small wooded area, following a river to near Tarakot, a large and interesting village with an old history and well maintained terraced farm fields. Tarakot with old fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village. The village houses famous old Sandul Gomba located on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where our overnight camp is pitched.

After a wonderful time at Tarakot, last day journey leads to Dunai after walking for few hours then taking a drive to Dunai. The Headquarter town of Dolpo district after a refreshing stop drive continues following many spread out villages to Jhupal for last overnight stop. From here next morning flight take you to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Morning walk to Jhupal small airport and then board in a small aircraft for short scenic flight to Nepalgunj facing views of Western Himalaya range of peaks.
At Nepalgunj for refreshing stop, and then board on connecting flight to Kathmandu. Where our great adventure concludes after a memorable adventure of wonderful experience around Nepal Far West Himalaya from Jumla to Lower Dolpo Trekking.
Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or join in for short tour around places of great interest.

A free day as contingency, in case of unfavorable bad weather that might lead to delay or cancellation of flight at Jhupal. As Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes even in best time of the year. If all goes well as per our standard itinerary, one can relax or join or join in for another tour around Kathmandu-Patan or Bhaktapur or enjoy individual activities.

Last day in Nepal as per your international flight time, our staff and guide transfer you to the airport for homeward bound. After a great time and adventure on Danphe Sail Peak Trek & Climb around Far West Nepal on Dolpo area.

01: Is Danphe Sail Peak a popular mountain to climb?

Danphe Sail Peak at 6,103 m/ 20,023 feet high is not a popular or famous
mountain. Due to its remote location and well-hidden corners of the Lower Dolpo
region, the trek is quite long to reach the base camp of Danphe Sail Peak.
Brown Bear Trail has been added to the list of trekking peaks, for interested private
groups, who are interested in the beaten trekking route. As well to enjoy the
hidden corners of Nepal’s Far Western Himalaya around Dolpo.

02: When is the best time for Danphe Sail Peak Climb?

Late spring to pre-summer time from March to June is the best for the trek and
climb of Danphe Sail Peak Climb. The next best season is early autumn/fall from
September to October. Most days are fine and clear, cold morning late afternoon, and night time can expect snow-fall during these seasons with extra wind-chill
factor. But the best times for this wonderful trek and climb of Danphe Sail Peak.

03: What are the facilities on route trek and climb?

Most of the trek and climb on a camping basis, staying in local lodges where
available en route to the Lower and Upper Dolpo areas.
More or less spending overnights in a tented camp, Brown Bear provides all
camping gear and food. Served from the separate kitchen tents cooked by our
expert chef and kitchen staff of great variation to make the trekkers and climbers
healthy and happy.

04: What are the chances of charging our electronic items?

Trekking around major villages and staying in lodges can recharge the electronic
items in the local lodges. But on camping, there will be no facilities for electricity
unless on request to carry a portable generator as an extra cost on the trip price.
Trekkers need to carry a portable solar panel for their own use, as the sun gets strong
at higher altitudes during day time.

05: What grade is the climb of Danphe Sail Peak?

The grade PD means Per Difficult as per French and Swiss Alpine Climbing
Classification Systems. A straightforward climb with few technical efforts to tackle
on rocks, ice, and snow to reach on top. The length of the journey makes the trek
quite hard, but enjoyable trek and climb.
